An NGO, in tandem with top Egyptiandesignersandmodels, willbeorganising a fashion show at the historic Tahrir Square in Cairo next year, that could well set a world record for the longest ever ramp — all of 2.5 km!
Indian designers including Sabyasachi, Agnimitra Paul, Wendell Rodricks, Manish Malhotra and Rocky S have been invited and are expected to participate in the event to be held on April 8, 2013.
The Egyptian government has cleared the proposal for the show, which will be part of the celebrations to mark the coming of age of the country, following the 2011 revolution that ousted president Hosni Mubarak.
The event is being organised by Indian BanglaFilmAcademy(theNGOwhichworks to promote films and culture across the border), in association with the Egyptian Tourism Department, which is sponsoring the event along with a few travel companies.
They aim to create the world's longest ramp, that will have the models cover a distance of 2.5 km. Representatives of the Guinness Book of World Records have confirmed they will be present to verify the record.
"We just received permission for the show from the Egyptian government, which was made possible through the Tourism Department. Guinness has also confirmed their representatives will be at the event. We hope they grant us recognition and confirm the record," said Tarakeshwar Singh, chairman of the organising committee.
While Manish Malhotra and Wendell Rodrickscouldnotbecontacted,AgnimitraPaul confirmed participation. She told Mumbai Mirror, "I will certainly take part in this fashionshow.Iamreallyproudtobeapartofsuch a landmark event. I just hope it is recognised as a world record. I will not restrict myself in terms of creativity, but will keep in mind the culture and the environment in Egypt."
When contacted, Rocky S told Mirror he is looking forward to participate. "I'll be delighted to be part of such an event. It is a great opportunity for Indian designers and models. The models, perhaps, will require special training to walk down such a long ramp. I guess the historic occasion and the world record attempt makes this show special."
The organisers sent out invitations to prominent Indian designers only after receiving permission for the show this week, an dare awaiting confirmation from them. "We studied the designs of a few Indian designers and are reaching out only to those whose creations would suit Egypt's culture. The designers will also have to agree not to display any bold creations as the country and their culture is more conservative than that of India," said another committee member.
"Top designers from Egypt will take part in the event, and their models will also sport clothes of Indian designers," Tarakeshwar said. "Imagine every model having to trudge a distance of 2.5 kilometres on the ramp. At the end of it all, we hope to be credited with the record we are working so hard to create."
