Mumbai may not have much of a winter, but the drop in temperatures is certainly encouraging students to wear their rarely-used winter clothes.
During the city’s tepid winter, fashion conscious youngsters can only hope to wear light knits and jutes. But students who are eager to
throw away the relatively clothes meant for the Mumbai monsoon have started wearing those more suited for the harsher winters of North India.
In a city soaked in humidity for most of the year, the pleasant winter months are an opportunity to experiment with different foods and clothing.
"I love winters as the weather is cool and my favourite fruit – strawberries - come around this season," said Sunaina Mistry, a first-year BA students at Saraf College, Malad.
Mistry is originally from Rajasthan where winters are much colder. The months of December and January are the time when she gets to wear her faux fur jackets.
Other students who are averse to drastic overhauls of their wardrobes prefer a little twist in styling while sticking to basics.
“Winter means extra style in my palette. My style is wearing hoodies and All Star Ankle Boots with a scarf around the neck," said Deesha Seth, student of MMK College, Bandra.
It is not just the girls who are experimenting. Even boys have taken to styling their wardrobe to this season.
"I wait for this season as I get an opportunity to dress smartly. I have started teaming up my full-sleeve shirts with jackets and zippers," said Pankaj Vishwakarma, student of Lala Lajpatrai College, Mahalaxmi.
He added that the cooler weather allows him to wear his winter boots in comfort.
Rakshit Singh from MMK College said, “I rarely ever get a chance to wear sweaters in Mumbai’s heat but the weather seems to be so pleasant that I recently shopped for striped sweater to wear to college."
For the boys, the season is also an opportunity to display head gears like monkey caps, hats and fancy head phones.
"Only winters permit me to wear monkey caps and woolen head bands," said Akhilesh Kumar, a third-year BSc student from Rizvi college, Bandra. He owns quite a few monkey caps wihich have slogans emblazoned on them. One of them reads: protecting an empty head.
