Love is in the air at runway wows New Zealand Fashion Week

Love is in the air at New Zealand Fashion Week.

Designer Hohepa Thompson delighted fashion fans when he proposed to Mia Brennan, both of the label Hori and Mimi, at the end of the runway.

In front of hundreds of people, Thompson got down on one knee after their show at the Miromoda showcase.

The couple, who have a six-month-old daughter, then got up and embraced on the runway before heading backstage for the next show.

Back behind the scenes, Thompson and Brennan couldn't stop grinning as every second person offered their congratulations.

Brennan said the proposal was "so cute" and "blew me away", but was still in shock, letting Thompson talk for her.

It was Brennan's birthday on Wednesday but Thompson saved the proposal for Thursday, despite a fear of doing it in front of a big crowd.

"I've been more nervous about this than anything today. One of the guys was like, 'go out there and give her a big kiss', and I said, 'oh I've got something a bit better than that'," Thompson said.

The couple met as designers at New Zealand Fashion Week's Miromoda Show two years ago.

Thompson's proud mum Anne Ryan said immediately after the show she had no idea the proposal was coming.

She had yet to speak to the pair but said, "I'm ecstatic."

Miromoda - the Indigenous Maori Fashion Apparel Board - was founded to advance the status of Maori fashion design. The group show is an annual fixture at Fashion Week. This year's theme was "fertility".
